In the article below, we said that we planned to continue selling KEDIT for Windows through this web site until at least the end of 2008, and to continue e-mail support until at least September 2009. We have decided to extend these dates, and we now plan to continue selling KEDIT for Windows through the web site until at least the end of 2009, and to provide e-mail support for it until at least September 2010.
KEDIT for Windows 1.6, released in December 2007, is still the current version of the program.
KEDIT for Windows 1.6 is primarily a maintenance release and is available as a free upgrade for licensed users of KEDIT for Windows 1.5.
The changes in KEDIT for Windows 1.6 include:
Improved compatibility with Windows Vista, including a new setup program, conversion of the Help file to HTML Help format, and adjustments to fit in with Vista's "User Account Control" security features.
Increased internal limits - for example, more files can now be edited at once, and more lines are allowed in macros.
Miscellaneous bug fixes, performance improvements, and minor new features, such as the ability to print syntax-colored text on a color printer.
More information, along with download links, is available at the KEDIT for Windows 1.6 Upgrade page.
KEDIT development started 25 years ago, in 1982, and the program first went on sale in 1983. KEDIT has been very good for everyone involved with Mansfield Software Group over the years, and based on the feedback we get we think it has been good for our customers as well. We often hear from long term customers who have been using KEDIT for 15 or 20 years.
The last major release of KEDIT, KEDIT for Windows 1.5, came out in 1996, and we are no longer actively working on major "new feature" releases of the program. Sales have slowed down over the years, and it now makes sense to gradually wind down Mansfield Software Group.
Many of our customers use KEDIT on a daily basis, and depend on it to help them get their work done. Our plans are always subject to change, but we want to let you know about them for your own planning purposes. That's why we began posting information about our plans in the "What's New" section of our web site in November 2006. We provided additional information in an August 2007 post, which is being brought up to date in this posting:
We have released KEDIT for Windows 1.6, the first maintenance release of KEDIT for Windows in 10 years. As we wind things down, we wanted to be sure that an up-to-date version of KEDIT that runs well with Windows Vista was in place. KEDIT for Windows 1.6 is available to licensed users of KEDIT for Windows 1.5 as a no-charge upgrade.
We have begun including PDF versions of the KEDIT for Windows User's Guide and Reference Manual with the program. This has allowed us to sell downloadable copies of the program through our web site, eliminating a lot of the packaging, data entry, and shipping work that we previously had to do. We are not supplying printed manuals for KEDIT for Windows 1.6; the PDF-format documentation is the only documentation we are providing.
We have also moved from telephone-based to e-mail based technical support, so that technical support can now be handled by people working from home on a part time basis. We plan to provide e-mail based technical support until at least September, 2009, and to release additional maintenance releases if necessary until then.
Because organizations that use KEDIT, as well as individuals who change jobs, etc., may have a continuing need for additional KEDIT licenses, we plan to continue selling KEDIT through our web site until at least the end of 2008.
With all orders going through the web, and all technical support handled through e-mail, we plan to close our business office in early 2008.
